Failing the Diversity Test

The selection of Argentinian cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the next leader of the Catholic Church was, in some ways, inevitable. Latin America is home to the largest Catholic population in the world, and it has been more than overtime for the tradition of selecting European popes to end. Hopefully, Cardinal Bergoglio, to be known as Pope Francis, will be able to stem the tide of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church as well as put the church on the path of more transparency and integrity. Proposals to allow women to be priests and to allow married priests into the clergy are, for Catholics, revolutionary ways to modernize the church. Pope Francis, who brings a reputation of frugality and humility to the church, may well be able to deal with these proposals.

Brotherhood Chorus Concert

On Sunday, March 24 at 5:30 p.m., the Brotherhood Chorus of Second Calvary Baptist Church, which is located at 1110 Mason Road, will present a special pre-Easter musical. The Brotherhood Chorus of Second Calvary will be featured in concert. Also appearing on program are male choruses from Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church (Columbia, S.C.), Zion Canaan Baptist Church (Columbia, S.C.), Northminister Presbyterian (Columbia, S.C.) and Men of Praise (Columbia, SC). In addition, Christopher Leysath, graduate student at the University of South Carolina, will give a special piano performance. The Brotherhood Chorus of Second Calvary will appear under the musical direction of the church’s pastor, Dr. Carl R. Wells. The concert is free admission and open to the public. REQUEST FOR STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS (SOQ) FOR FLOOR CLEANING SERVICES 
The Richland – Lexington Airport District (“District”) is seeking Statement of Qualifications (SOQs) from Floor Cleaning Service Providers (“Providers”) for floor cleaning services at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. A non-mandatory meeting to discuss this SOQ will be held on March 13, 2013 at 10:00 am EDST in the Carolina Room at the Main Terminal Building, 3250 Aviation Way, West Columbia SC 29170. Attendees will have an opportunity to walk through the scope of work area described below.

The selected Provider(s) shall deliver the following floor care services at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport: all labor to perform scrubber cleaning and burnishing/buffing of hard surfaces to a clean shine; extracting carpets every quarter to free the areas of embedded soils and stains; and evaluate terrazzo floors annually to determine if stripping, sealing and/or waxing is needed. This work includes, but not limited to, removal of old wax off base boards and stainless steel surfaces along with moving furniture and replacing it back into its respective area. The area of floor care service is 50,215 square feet of carpet and 39,692 square feet of terrazzo hard surfaces.
