MYRTLE BEACH, SC – South Carolina State junior Tiana Jones defeated Bethune-Cookman’s Patrizia Trevisan on the first playoff hole to earn medalist honors and lead the Lady Bulldogs to a runner-up finish at the MEAC Golf Showcase, played Friday and Saturday (Apr. 13-14) at the Legends Resort & Golf Club at Myrtle Beach.
Jones (71-78) and Trevisan (75-74) both recorded 36-hole totals of 149 at the four-team event, where Bethune-Cookman captured the team title with a two-day total of (313-311) 624. The Lady Bulldogs were second with a 36-hole total of (319-335) 654. Hampton was third at (356-346) at 702, followed by Savannah State with a (379-379) 758.
Jones had a 1-under par 71 in the first round, when SC State trailed eventual winner B-Cookman by just six strokes. The Alliance, OH junior was 6-over on her final round with a 78 but still managed a tie with the Lady Wildcats’ Trevisan, who had rounds of 3-over 75 on Friday and 2-over 74 Saturday.
Jones won a playoff on the first hole to earn her third medalist honor of the season.
Following Jones in the field for SC State were sophomore Cheryl Chua, who tied for fourth with a (80-78) 158, senior Cabriel Duren with a (79-89) 168 and a tie for eighth and sophomore Cherie Chua at (89-90) 179. Also competing for Coach Sandy Burris’ team was senior Allison Brown.
SC State resumes its schedule at the Apr. 26-28 Women in Golf Classic at Stone Mountain, GA, and culminates its season May 9-12 at the 2013 PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship at Port St. Lucie, FL.
