COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers wrapped up their home schedule with an 8-6 non-conference victory over Morris College on Monday, as Jocquse Brunson and Jan Oyola each had home runs, and Benedict surpassed the 300-mark in stolen bases for the season.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Kevin Davis singled and Brunson blasted a shot over the left field wall for his sixth homer of the year.
Morris cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the second, but then the Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Daniel Young led off with a single, then Oyola hit his first home run of the season over the left field wall. Elisha McDaniel ripped a triple down the right field line, and came home on a single by Kevin Davis.
Morris closed the gap to 5-3 with two runs in the fourth inning.
Benedict increased the lead to 8-3 with three runs in the fifth inning. Davis led off with a single, and Brunson followed with a single. Kurtis Burnett singled to right field to score Davis. Errors allowed Brunson and Burnett to score.
Morris hit a pair of solo home runs in the sixth inning to make it 8-5, then added another run in the seventh, scoring on a Benedict wild pitch.
Brunson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Oyola was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Davis was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored. The Tigers stole seven bases on the day, with Davis recording three. Benedict now has stolen 303 bases in 34 games, 13 shy of the NCAA record of 316 the Tigers set in 2010.
Benedict improved to 25-9 on the season. The Tigers travel to Orangeburg to take on Claflin in a key SIAC series on Saturday and Sunday.
